Historical day, for several reasons

This G20 summit has been an historical day for a number of reasons.
First, due to the set of critical decisions which have been made on world level by representatives of more than 80 of mankind.
Second, because, in a major international summit, a blogger has been considered as an equal to the members of the traditional media establishment. Maybe, this day will be remembered as a corner stone in the history of journalism :-)

I'm delighted - for two reasons.

Firstly, because of the recognition of Richard Murphy's work and that of the Tax Justice Network.

And secondly, because Gordon Brown gave a direct answer to the question that was raised!

Whilst not everyone agrees with Richard's approach I cannot help but admire his diligence, commitment, consistency and eloquency. And there's no doubting that his relentless pursuit for tax justice is having an impact.

Hey, I'm Rowan Davies, the mumsnet blogger from G20 Voice. Richard scored a major coup here, and good on him. But I'd just like to point out that I'd already asked two questions at press conferences at the G20 before Brown's conference was held. So the honour of being the first blogger to ask a question at a major summit goes to ME. Mwah ha ha ha etc. But Richard was mightily impressive at the summit and all power to him.

Richard Murphy's tireless blogging has brought him this far and undoubtedly has helped to bring the issue of international tax avoidance and evasion to the attention and now the agenda of the G20 governments.

Now that all the G20 have agreed on the principle of tax information exchange between countries we will all need to put our thinking caps on to devise and develop systems that will be able to send and receive information on taxpayers across borders. For example, do we know which agencies will be handling the data requests? Will they be banks and tax collection agencies? Will the requests be made by email, on forms or by telephone? There's a lot to consider before their promises can be turned into real action.
