On January 12, I went to basketball practice and then spent time with a kids' basketball league. The whole time my phone was in the car.

Sally Fay Cottingham is a member of the Board of Directors for The U.S. Fund for UNICEF's New England regional office.

Anne Garrels, world-renowned foreign correspondent for NPR's foreign desk, spoke at the Women's Luncheon Series held in the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's New England regional office late last month.

"I have had enough of wars," she told the audience. "The goal (of war) is to destroy one's sense of self."

Judith, age 15, lost her mother to the earthquake in Haiti in January. Today she and her fellow students support each other through their grief at one of hundreds of schools that have re-opened with UNICEF support. It is one a very few public schools in Haiti, where 90 percent of schools are private. 38,000 students and 1,300 teachers are estimated to have died in the earthquake.

On the day of the quake, Ms. Lambert, our School Director, sent us home early because she had heard that not far from our school a university teacher had been killed and there was fear of rioting.

Ending armed recruitment and sexual exploitation is not an "option"

UNICEF hosted a special event today to commemorate the 10th anniversary of two critical agreements on international child protection. The protocols to protect children from sexual exploitation and from enforced combat have been adopted by more than 130 U.N. member states -- including the U.S, which has not ratified the full Convention on the Rights of the Child (more on that here).
