Today is International Literacy Day, and while we certainly want to celebrate the fact that there are 4 billion literate people in the world today, we must also concede that for far too many, the opportunity to learn to read and write is still a luxury.

We had an amazing time at Electric Picnic and the Oxjam Open Mic had some amazing acts jump up and play.  I’ll be uploading videos and photos in the coming days but in the meantime enjoy brother and sister Dylan and Lauren perform their favourite track ‘Everlong’ (Foo Fighters) in the OxJam tent at Electric Picnic festival 2010.  Unbelievable!

Enhancing girls’ education in remote areas of Pakistan

Many thanks to Madiha Shafi, Program Officer for our Girls Education programme in Pakistan, for sharing this documentary with us.
Millions of children, most of them girls, do not have access to quality education, particularly in developing nations.
This project, “Enhancing Girls Education in Remote Areas,” is funded by Dubai Cares, a non-profit organisation working worldwide to improve access to primary education for children in developing countries. The project is being carried out through Oxfam and its local partner Idara-e-Taleemo Agahi (ITA) in Pakistan.
